When we stumbled upon an exquisitely restored Golf MK2 making waves on the internet, the fresh build was too intriguing to ignore. The car, a testament to skilled craftsmanship and automotive passion, was the work of Tom Clarke, a dedicated member of the VW community. We reached out to Tom for an interview, eager to uncover the story behind this remarkable transformation. What followed was a fascinating insight into Tom's journey, from his initial interest in the iconic car to the meticulous process of bringing a neglected Golf MK2 back to life.
Sparking a Passion: The Beginning of a Journey
Growing up in the vibrant VW scene, Tom always found himself surrounded by the classic models of Volkswagen. Interestingly, his early years were spent driving French cars – something different that set them apart from everyday brands. But it was the Golf MK2 that truly captured his imagination.
Discovering the Diamond in the Rough
The hunt for the perfect Golf MK2 started on Facebook Marketplace, where Tom stumbled upon a potential deal. However, fate had other plans. A conversation with a close friend led him to a Golf MK2 that had been sitting idle for 15 years. Despite its neglected state, the car had a solid shell – a blank canvas patiently waiting for a transformation. The previous owner's reluctance to sell it to someone who wouldn't appreciate its potential turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He's now overjoyed to see the car revived, rather than scrapped or flipped for profit.
A Memorable Moment
One of the most unforgettable moments was when he first went to view the old car. Max, the previous owner, casually mentioned he'd 'lift it out quickly' – and he did, with a telehandler! It was a moment that perfectly captured the blend of humor and dedication that went into this project.
Envisioning the Transformation
Tom’s vision for the Golf MK2 was ambitious: to blend unique elements with features that would resonate with Volkswagen enthusiasts. He aimed to create something that stood out in the VW world while paying homage to its roots.
Powering Up: Engine and Transmission
The car began its life as a humble 1.3cl. Now, it boasts a robust 2.0ltr 16v (ABF) engine, coupled with an 02j gearbox. This significant upgrade from its original specs was a pivotal part of the build, giving the car a new lease on life.
Overcoming Challenges
One of the joys of working on a MK2 is the wealth of knowledge and precedent available. However, his goal wasn't just to upgrade the engine; it was to seamlessly integrate it into the car, creating a factory-like finish. This involved customizing numerous components, from radiators to brake lines. The collaboration with J-Tech and Reflex Automotive resulted in what he considers a true masterpiece.
Blending the Old with the New
This project was more than a restoration; it was a reimagination. He introduced modern components like the Forge Motorsport big brake kit and upgraded the rear axle to a GTI beam with mk4 calipers. The suspension system got an upgrade with H&R deeps and StillStatic adjustable top mounts, not forgetting the sleek CAE Shifter.
Pride in Every Piece
Finding parts for such a unique build was challenging, especially the lower cam cover for the engine. It was a reminder that even in a well-documented build, surprises await. If Tom had to pick one aspect of the build that he is most proud of, he’d say it’s the entire car. It's not just about individual components; it's how they all come together to create a coherent, stylish, and functional vehicle.
Advice for Aspiring Restorers
For anyone embarking on a MK2 restoration or build, his advice is simple: enjoy the process. Have a plan, but be flexible. Projects evolve, and sometimes the best outcomes come from unexpected changes. As for the future of this Golf MK2, the plan is to get out and enjoy the ride!
